I Ate Sushi For The First Time As A 33-Year-Old, And Here Were My Favorite (And Least Favorite) Pieces

My First Sushi Experience at 33: The Hits and Misses

Hey there, sushi lovers and newbies alike! I’m Spencer, and I recently took the plunge into the world of sushi for the first time at the ripe age of 33. With so many different types of sushi out there, I thought it would be fun to share my experience and let you know which pieces I loved and which ones… not so much. So, grab your chopsticks and let’s dive in!

The Hits

1. Spicy Tuna Roll: This roll was a pleasant surprise! The tuna was fresh, and the spice added a nice kick without being overpowering. Definitely a new favorite.

2. Salmon Nigiri: The salmon was incredibly buttery and just melted in my mouth. I can see why this is a staple in the sushi world.

3. Eel Roll (Unagi): I was a bit hesitant about trying eel, but it turned out to be delicious. The sweet sauce drizzled on top really complemented the flavor of the eel.

The Misses

1. Sea Urchin (Uni): This one was a no-go for me. The texture was a bit too slimy, and the taste was too ocean-y for my liking. Maybe it’s an acquired taste?

2. Octopus (Tako): The octopus was chewy and didn’t have much flavor. It wasn’t terrible, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to order it again.

3. Mackerel (Saba): This piece had a very strong, fishy taste that I couldn’t get past. It might be a hit for some, but it wasn’t for me.

Final Thoughts

Overall, my first sushi experience was a mixed bag, but I’m glad I tried it. There were definitely some standout pieces that I’d happily eat again, and a few that I’ll probably avoid in the future. If you’re new to sushi like I was, I recommend starting with the more popular options like spicy tuna rolls or salmon nigiri—they’re popular for a reason! Happy eating, and may your sushi adventures be filled with delicious discoveries.
