Tragedy Strikes the Gaudreau Family

On Thursday, August 29, 2024, a devastating accident in Oldmans Township, New Jersey claimed the lives of two brothers, Johnny Gaudreau, 31, and Matthew Gaudreau, 29. The brothers were riding their bicycles when they were hit by a vehicle driven by 43-year-old Sean Higgins of Woodstown, New Jersey.

Higgins was arrested at the scene and charged with two counts of death by auto. He admitted to drinking 5-6 beers before driving and failed field sobriety tests. According to reports, Higgins was attempting to pass another vehicle when his car collided with the Gaudreaus, tragically ending their lives.

Remembering Johnny and Matthew

Johnny Gaudreau was a beloved figure in the NHL, known for his incredible talent and sportsmanship. He was a seven-time NHL All-Star, playing for the Columbus Blue Jackets and previously the Calgary Flames. Johnny’s skill and passion for hockey earned him admiration from fans and fellow players alike.

Matthew shared his brother’s love for hockey, coaching at Gloucester Catholic High School. Both brothers were actively involved in their local hockey community in Carneys Point Township, where they grew up playing for teams like the Little Flyers and Team Comcast. The Gaudreau brothers leave behind a legacy of athleticism and community involvement.

Johnny is survived by his wife, Meredith, and their two children, Noa and Johnny. Matthew is survived by his wife, Madeline, who is expecting their first child. The loss of these two young men, both husbands and fathers, is immeasurable.

Tributes and condolences have poured in from across the hockey community, including heartfelt messages from the Columbus Blue Jackets, Philadelphia Flyers, and NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman. Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and other public figures have also expressed their condolences. The Gaudreau family remains in the thoughts of many during this difficult time.
