Running the Burning Man 50k Ultramarathon: What It’s Really Like

Imagine running 50 kilometers in the middle of the desert. Now, imagine doing that at Burning Man. Sounds wild, right? Well, that’s exactly what some brave souls do every year. Welcome to the Burning Man 50k Ultramarathon!

The Start Line

You might think an event like this would have a fancy start line, but nope! Runners gather at the crack of dawn, usually around 5 a.m., when the desert is still cool. The starting point? Just a spot marked by a few cones and some enthusiastic volunteers.

The Terrain

Forget smooth paths or even trails. This marathon takes you through the heart of Black Rock City and out into the open playa. The ground is dusty, uneven, and can be downright tough on your feet. But hey, it’s all part of the adventure!

The Weather

Temperatures can range from chilly in the early morning to scorching hot as the day goes on. You’ll need to stay hydrated and protect yourself from the sun. Sunscreen and hats are a must!

The People

One of the best parts of this race is the community. Fellow runners are super supportive, and spectators cheer you on with shouts of encouragement. And because it’s Burning Man, expect to see some wild costumes and maybe even a few surprises along the way.

The Aid Stations

Scattered throughout the course are aid stations stocked with water, snacks, and sometimes even quirky goodies. These stations are lifesavers, offering you a brief respite and a chance to refuel before hitting the dusty trail again.

The Finish Line

Crossing the finish line is a triumph like no other. You’ve battled the elements, pushed your limits, and come out on top. The sense of accomplishment is immense, and the cheers from fellow Burners make it even sweeter.

Why Do It?

Why would anyone run 50k at Burning Man? For many, it’s about pushing personal boundaries and experiencing something truly unique. Plus, it’s a fantastic way to see the playa from a whole new perspective.

So, if you’re ever at Burning Man and looking for a challenge, consider signing up for the ultramarathon. It’s tough, but oh so rewarding. See you on the playa!
