Living the Dream with a Dash of Fear
Imagine living in a place where every day is a mix of hope and uncertainty. That’s what life feels like for many who, like me, are DACA recipients. We’re often called “Dreamers,” and while we have dreams, there’s always a cloud of doubt hanging over us. I came to the U.S. as a child, brought here by my parents who were searching for a better life. The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program has allowed me to build a life here, but the fear of it all being taken away never leaves.
The Journey Begins
When I first arrived in the U.S., everything was new and exciting. I was just a kid, so I didn’t fully understand the challenges ahead. My parents worked hard to give us a stable life, and I focused on school, trying to fit in and make them proud. As I grew older, the reality of my situation became clearer. I wasn’t just another student; I was undocumented.
DACA Brings Hope
In 2012, DACA changed everything for me. Suddenly, I could work legally, get a driver’s license, and even apply for college. It felt like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders. I started building a future I could be excited about, one step at a time. But with every step forward, there’s always that nagging thought: What if it all disappears?
The Fear Factor
Living under DACA means living with uncertainty. Every two years, I have to renew my status, hoping the program still exists. The political climate can change quickly, and with it, my ability to stay in the only home I’ve ever known. It’s a constant reminder that my life here is not guaranteed.
Finding Strength
Despite the fear, I find strength in my community and the support of those who believe in our cause. Sharing my story helps others understand what it’s like to live in this in-between space. It also gives me courage to keep pushing forward, even when the future seems shaky.
Hope for Tomorrow
I dream of a day when I won’t have to worry about losing everything. Until then, I’ll keep working hard, staying hopeful, and supporting others like me. We may live with uncertainty, but we also live with an unyielding determination to make our dreams come true.
