I Have A Trans 9-Year-Old. I Thought I Knew What It Would Be Like To Parent Him — But I Was Wrong.

Discovering a New Path with My Transgender Child

When my 9-year-old came out as transgender, I assumed I knew what was ahead. But, wow, was I in for a surprise! As a parent, you think you’re ready for anything, but this journey taught me so much more than I expected.

The Initial Realization

When my child first told me he was a boy, I thought I understood. I had read articles and watched videos about being a supportive parent. But living it day-to-day is different. It’s like stepping into a whole new world that I wasn’t fully prepared for, despite thinking I was.

Learning to Listen

The most important thing I’ve learned is to truly listen. At first, I wanted to jump in and fix everything. But sometimes, he just needed me to hear him out. Listening helped me understand his feelings and what he needed from me as his mom.

Facing Challenges Together

There were challenges, of course. We dealt with questions from family and friends, and there were moments when I didn’t have all the answers. But we faced them together, and each challenge brought us closer.

Finding Support

One of the best things we did was find a community. Connecting with other parents of transgender kids gave us a sense of belonging. It was comforting to share experiences and advice with people who understood our journey.

Embracing the Journey

Parenting a transgender child has been an unexpected adventure. It’s not always easy, but it’s filled with love and growth. Watching my son become his true self is a beautiful experience. I’ve learned that parenting is all about embracing the journey, wherever it may lead.

So, if you find yourself on a similar path, remember to listen, support, and cherish every moment. You’ll learn more than you ever imagined and grow alongside your child in the most amazing ways.
